Dump and Die

Our neighbourhood has had enough.

I live in a rural area. We're about 5 minutes away by car from a small town called Swansboro.

We're about 20 minutes away from a small city called Jacksonville. We're definitely rural. I live next to trailers with toilets and pig cookers sitting in the front yard. Redneck central. Usually I don't care, it gives me something to blog about.

But...being rural DOES NOT give people the right to back their trucks down our road and dump their trash in our ditches.

People who are too CHEAP and too LAZY to take their trash to the Onslow County dump on the other side of Jacksonville. To dump it there for a few measly dollars. Is that really HARD? Is it???

Trash = many things.

Rocking chairs...

Barbeque grills....

And make sure lamp/magazine stands aren't left out...

Those three things have been dumped down that road all in the span of
three weeks. Within a few feet of each other.

Mr. A and I did not nail that sign to the tree. But we APPLAUD the people that did. Some people have no respect for the people living in this area. We're a new-ish subdivision, and house building is really starting to boom back here. When I first moved here, all that was dumped were beer cans and condoms/condom wrappers. People have decided to upgrade I guess. No more condoms, only grills!

I had seen this sign posted yesterday when I was taking a daily walk. Mr. A and I jumped in the car tonight so I could show him and take some pictures. There were some people walking down where the trash had been dumped, and they looked at us like we were the dumpers!

Mr. A said that we should let the people who were walking know that we weren't responsible, and I didn't want to because I thought that was silly. But I ended up saying ok, and we drive down after the walkers. We came upon them, and explained ourselves. Thanks goodness we did! They said they were going to take our license plate tag numbers and report us, because they thought we were the dumpers! LOL

I love my house, and I love my yard. I just wish they were in a different place :P

There are bombs and guns going off on the nearby Camp Lejeune Marine base. There are people spotlighting deer on the side of the road so they can shoot them when they're dazzled. There are people running deer dogs through the woods to drive the deer out, so the 'hunters' can shoot them.

I'm tired of it.

I say, leave my bit of home alone!

Oh Kyna, I'm sorry you're having to deal with that. Many years ago I used to ride my horse down by a creek near me. I was amazed at the kind of things I used to see dumped down there - old sofas, mattresses - no grills though. And the people had to bump down a narrow, rutted dirt track to get to where they were dumping. They went out of their way to dump there instead of going to the more convenient dump, and pay a few bucks to dump stuff there.

I'm sorry for the deer around your way too :-(

I always wonder who raised people like these! Not only lazy and cheap, but filthy and dangerous. I hope you and your neighbors have some luck in stopping it.

My uncle is a township trustee in rural Minnesota and his main job is to pick up trash that city folk dump. I wish you well. jim

Wish I could say the dumping problem was different here but on the road just minutes out of Victoria, you see No dumping signs. It must be everywhere. The things in your photos could have been so easily recycled too. Feel sorry for the deer though.

Yes. I'm with you all the way. We are only battling with getting our illegal dump closed. And getting recycling going. Took our car-full into the city of Cape Town yesterday, when we went to visit my mother. Were glad to confirm that we can also recycle our Tetrapaks there now.

I just don't get how people can do something like that and feel like its no big deal...littering of any kind is one of my biggest pet peeves. I'm sorry you have to deal with this Kyna.

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with people dumping trash in your neighbourhood. Catching them with a camera would help but they are probably doing it overnight. What does the town authorities say about it? Valerie

I hope you all can find a way to make it stop. I find it hard to believe some people.

Dear Kyna, I'm afraid this problem is not just in your neighborhood. But I know that is no comfort to you. My husband spends a lot of time cleaning up the trash that is dumped around our property. I can't understand these people. Sorry you have to deal with this, too.

That is all very sad. These are the same people that throw trash on our roadways. Litterbugs on steroids! Maybe the sign will help. Hopefully, as more homes are built, the dumping will decrease, but the dumpers will probably just find another rural spot to spoil.

Dumping sucks, badly.

It seems to be a way bigger problem around here than it used to be. Local Councils have whacked up the charges for using the tip to $50. Since then people (if you can call them that) have been dumping in the bush.

Can't you get an old, broken, whatever surveillance camera and mount it there with a sign, "under video surveillance" or something? Just a thought....

Oh my god Kyna .. what a horrible way to have to live with that going on .. it is sickening .. I won't even go into the deer thing, too horrible. Heather has an idea though .. we have actually seen it happen here on some houses .. fake camera but know one knows for sure they are fake .. but dealing with intense rednecks like that .. they probably have no idea what the hell it is ? LOL
Sorry .. I just can't believe people live like that .
Hope it improves girl .. no one wants that near them !

Heather - not a bad idea! Although if *I* was pissed off enough by the problem, I'd just as likely get a REAL surveillance camera - they're cheap and good these days, and likely solve that problem within weeks.

Ya, that's horrid. Fake cameras may help...?

Screw fake cameras, get real ones and identify the sons of bitches. Then, when they're at home, sleeping, sneak up and dump something on their lawn.

Oh, wait, then break in and tie them to their beds and slowly extract their teeth, one by one, with a rusted set of pliers.

Oh, hang on, then push some rusted pins under their fingernails.

Then chop off their hands and feet and make them eat them through their gummy mouths.

I doubt they'll be dumping again near your place!

I haven't seen a blog post in a while...hope all is well.

Oh Kyna, you must be ready to pull your hair out...or somebody's! Yes, signs are good and call your local municipal office and complain and keep complaining. This is not acceptable.

In the meantime, hang in there and enjoy the good stuff - like your garden! :-)

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone :D I wish it was a camera worthy area...but where the dumping is, would be a weird place to put it. It's just a dirt road and trees...and they'd probably see it, and just move farther down the road to dump.

I don't know...I just don't understand people. They're probably the same people that leave the public bathrooms at work a nasty mess. Mr. Dangerfield had it right, no respect.
